Overview

Everything you want to know and more about Drupion as a company.

Drupal Specific Hosting

Drupion is a California-based company focused on providing managed and optimized hosting services to small, medium-size and large businesses and organizations running their sites on Drupal, a popular and free content management system.

Drupion was born out of our frustration trying to find good hosting solutions for Drupal-based projects that we built for our customers. For many years we have tried services of a number of other hosting companies and have found that most of them either oversell their servers or do not tweak them for optimal performance for Drupal websites.

We purchased and configured our first server in 2003 and since then have been serving hosting needs of our Drupal customers. In 2010, our clients' needs and our own aspirations to provide the best Drupal hosting in the face of stronger and fiercer competition prompted the new name of our company - Drupion, or simply Drupal companion.

We incorporated in 2013 and the number of our customers has grown to such an extent that we now have dozens of Drupal-optimized servers at different locations around the world. We serve a wide range of customers from individual bloggers to small, mid-sized and large companies to international agencies such as the UN International Organization for Migration.

While growing our company and client base, we have learned and continue to develop the best ways of configuring our servers to host Drupal websites. We are proud of our accomplishments and looking forward to many more years of successful service to our current and new customers.

Our Strengths and Advantages

Our competitors bluntly declare that traditional hosting is dead and clouds are the answer. We see it as a marketing gimmick.

Truth be told, not every website needs such scalability where it can handle the traffic of 1,000 visits one day and 1 million – the next. Of course as website owners and developers we all hope that our website will become the next Internet hit, but in reality most websites build traffic and clientele gradually. Drupion's various hosting plans allow for the options to grow such capacity progressively with the client’s needs.

Better yet, we help our clients' growth without binding yearly contracts and no limits to the number of websites that can be hosted under one of our plans. So at the end of the billing period our clients are never “surprised” by unexpected fees for extra websites and services that were not included into the plan they selected.

Although this is unlikely because our relationship with our customers is based on trust and high quality of services, if a client decides to leave us for any reason, our respect for the original Drupal structure will make the transition much easier than with larger cloud-based companies that heavily modify the structure.

Finally, we provide 24/7 technical support and will try to do everything to meet our clients' most urgent or unexpected needs. At prices that are much lower than those of our competitors, we believe Drupion is the best choice for anyone – individuals, a small or large organization – to host websites of any size and variety.

Why Choose Us?

There are thousands of hosting companies in the United States and around the world, and as the demand for websites grows so does the number of hosting companies. They all have different business philosophies, pricing models and ranges of customer-tailored packages.

It is difficult to provide “pros and cons” or “advantages and disadvantages” comparisons for the vast array of hosting companies because their business goals and approaches vary, just as their target customers do. Any such analysis will be highly contextual and unnecessarily take us into the area of opinions and judgments.

Instead, we have compiled factual information for you, as a potential customer, to make an intelligent decision as to which hosting company will best serve your needs. The graph below presents facts and quotes pulled from the websites of three leading Drupal-hosting companies. These are unavoidably general categories that provide a glimpse into the companies’ nature, business and pricing approaches. What We Do on Technology Side

We carefully configure our CentOS and Ubuntu-powered servers for optimal performance to best meet requirements of Drupal installations. We utilize underlying hardware technology in combination with the best Drupal-proven performance software like Varnish, APC, Apache Solr, etc. to provide the best performance.

Since Drupal's modularity and extendability requires a lot of configuration at the server side, top quality support is critical. This is why Drupion puts great emphasis on offering the best Drupal-centric and Drupal-specific hosting support, compared to any other hosting provider. This is particularly important for Drupal newbies struggling through a comparatively difficult Drupal learning curve. We want to welcome such new Drupal users to the community and hold their hand on the exciting path of learning and using Drupal.

Because Drupion’s approach to providing hosting services is completely different from that of all other hosting companies, Drupion is able to deliver unprecedented competitive advantage to organizations, businesses, Drupal shops and Drupal developers in the form of higher hardware utilization and margins, and in computer and website performance and scalability.

We Provide Drupal-Tuned Hosting Services

Drupal is an open-source Content Management System (CMS) and Framework (CMF) that is used in a variety application areas worldwide. It is suitable for both small websites and complex web applications. It is known for its high scalability and modular structure.

Equipped with a powerful blend of features, Drupal supports a variety of website applications ranging from personal weblogs to large community-driven, corporate websites.

Drupal’s community of active users and devoted developers have created thousands of add-on modules that enable you to incorporate forums, picture galleries, and podcasting functionality on your website, just to name a few.

In short Drupal is great tool to build websites with. However running Drupal installations can be time consuming, stressful and potentially insecure if your server is not optimized specifically for Drupal.

We serve Drupal community by providing Drupal-tuned managed hosting services. We configure our servers by careful compiling our company-brewed DrupionOS LAMP stack for maximum performance. We constantly monitor our servers performance bottlenecks: CPU, memory, bandwidth, input/output and make necessary configuration changes or resource upgrades.

Drupion takes over the routine server administration tasks, from installation to backup to upgrades. In essence, it reduces stress and leaves you more time on development or other, more fun activities.

We Enhance Drupal Hosting with Apache Solr Search

The search module in core Drupal provides a general framework for indexing and searching. It does not provide any search functionality on its own. Unfortunately, core search module has several drawbacks that limit its utility:

  • For the content search, only exact keywords match. This means that if someone searches for "quake", and a node contains "quakes", "quaking", or "earthquake", it will not be matched. In contrast, user name search always looks for substrings, so for instance if you search for "jo", you would find users called "mojo" and "josephine" as well.
  • All of the Node content on your site will be indexed, whether you want it to be or not. For some sites, this may not be appropriate, as some content types are not ever meant to be displayed (or searched) on their own pages, but only on composite pages such as Views.
  • Only Node content on the site will be indexed. So if you have a module that produces content that is not Nodes, or pages that are composites of multiple nodes (such as Views), they will not be included in search results. Again, this may be a problem for some sites.
  • Profile fields are not searched in the User search, just the user names.
  • There is no faceted search capability.
  • If you have modified how the Node content on your site is displayed in the Theme, these modifications will not be indexed correctly. The content that is indexed is the default view of the node, not the view as rendered by the Theme.

For big sites, say tens of thousands of nodes, the Drupal core search module is not suitable any longer. To handle high search volumes, one should look to external third party search solutions. The most popular open source tool is Apache Solr.

Solr is the popular, blazing fast open source enterprise search platform from the Apache Lucene project. Its major features include powerful full-text search, hit highlighting, faceted search, dynamic clustering, database integration, and rich document (e.g., Word, PDF) handling. Solr is highly scalable, providing distributed search and index replication, and it powers the search and navigation features of many of the world's largest internet sites.

Solr is written in Java and runs as a standalone full-text search server within a servlet container such as Tomcat. Solr uses the Lucene Java search library at its core for full-text indexing and search, and has REST-like HTTP/XML and JSON APIs that make it easy to use from virtually any programming language. Solr's powerful external configuration allows it to be tailored to almost any type of application without Java coding, and it has an extensive plugin architecture when more advanced customization is required.

The Solr search functionality for Drupal installations is maintained on all our Drupal optimized servers. So you can disable core search indexing on Apache Solr Search module settings, which also reduces load on MySQL.

We Developed DrupionOS Built on CentOS and Ubuntu

Over the years of providing hosting services we have developed DrupionOS, our own standard package of server scripts over CentOS and Ubuntu LTS specifically tuned to run Drupal websites.

DrupionOS consists of properly installed and carefully tuned Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP stack with many other Drupal-critical scripts and programs like Alternative PHP Cache, Varnish HTTP reverse proxy cache, Memcache distributed memory object caching system, Apache Solr, Drush and many others already installed and configured.

DrupionOS also comes with Webmin/Virtualmin tandem, one of the most powerful control panel system, which enables a regular user to easily perform many important server administration tasks like controlling all the above-listed programs and almost everything else that is usually done by Linux experts in SSH. Webmin/Virtualmin control panel also allows one-click deployment of different versions and distributions of Drupal.

We keep DrupionOS constantly updated and upgraded with the last versions of LAMP stack software, patched version of Pressflow, Drupal 6, Drupal 7, Drupal 8 and their respective community contributed modules.

Our DrupionOS servers run the minimum network services necessary to reduce the risk of remote penetration, and have proprietary security modifications to the operating system that make it extremely difficult for a remote or local user to elevate his/her privileges.

DrupionOS is a hand-built and specially prepared computing system to host the Drupal websites. DrupionOS has specialist operating system striped of anything that is not needed for Drupal. This ensures that all of the resources and server space used for the purpose of your Drupal websites. A typical DrupionOS distribution contains all the software packages that various Drupal setups need and can be extended with any other scripts and programs any time on a customer request.

We Improve Drupal Hosting with Varnish

Varnish is an HTTP accelerator designed for content-heavy dynamic web sites and best suits to run on Drupal Virtual and Dedicated Servers.

In contrast to other HTTP accelerators, such as Squid, which began life as a client-side cache, or Apache and nginx, which are primarily origin servers, Varnish was designed from the ground up as an HTTP accelerator. Varnish is focused exclusively on HTTP, unlike other proxy servers that often support FTP, SMTP and other network protocols.

Varnish stores data in virtual memory and leaves the task of deciding what is stored in memory and what gets paged out to disk to the operating system. This helps avoid the situation where the operating system starts caching data while they are moved to disk by the application.

Furthermore, Varnish is heavily threaded, with each client connection being handled by a separate worker thread. When the configured limit on the number of active worker threads is reached, incoming connections are placed in an overflow queue; only when this queue reaches its configured limit will incoming connections be rejected.

The principal configuration mechanism is VCL (Varnish Configuration Language), a domain-specific language (DSL) used to write hooks which are called at critical points in the handling of each request. Most policy decisions are left to VCL code, making Varnish far more configurable and adaptable than most other HTTP accelerators. When a VCL script is loaded, it is translated to C, compiled to a shared object by the system compiler, and linked directly into the accelerator.

A number of run-time parameters control things such as the maximum and minimum number of worker threads, various timeouts etc. A command-line management interface allows these parameters to be modified, and new VCL scripts to be compiled, loaded and activated, without restarting the accelerator.

In order to reduce the number of system calls in the fast path to a minimum, log data is stored in shared memory, and the task of filtering, formatting and writing log data to disk is delegated to a separate application.

Pre-installed and pre-configured Varnish is integral part of DrupionOS, installed on all our virtual and dedicated servers.

We Designed an Easy to Use and Powerful Admin Panel

Virtualmin makes deploying and managing Drupal-website a simple and enjoyable process. Drupion utilizes Virtualmin on all its servers.

Virtualmin is easy to use, even for non-technical users, while still providing extreme flexibility not found in any other virtual hosting administration system. By leveraging the powerful Open Source general system administration tool Webmin and the related webmail and user account management tool Usermin, Virtualmin provides unprecedented power as well as a standard interface across all aspects of the system.

Every user of a Virtualmin system from the administrator down to the mailbox user, sees a similar interface with the same themes, the same terminology, and the same conventions. Ease of use is often a function of familiarity and predictability, and the Virtualmin stack is the only tool in its class to provide the same interface to all users for all tasks. In fact, the functionality of Virtualmin is so comprehensive, that you may run your own shared hosting company on a single Drupion server. Please contact us if you are interested and we will help you to set up your own hosting company.

The main features why Drupion has chosen Virtualmin as admin panel for all its servers:

  • One-click Drupal deployment.
